Moxibustion for low blood pressure

A natural remedy for low blood pressure

When we say the words Blood Pressure our immediate response is to assume that we are talking about high blood pressure - a condition known as hypertension. In this article however we will talk about blood pressure at the other end of the scale - hypotension, a condition better known as low blood pressure.

What is low blood pressure?

Low blood pressure is where you have a reading of less than 90/60mmHg. Having this condition does not always result in symptoms – which means that it may go undetected for some time. People with low blood pressure may complain of feeling lightheaded or dizzy, particularly when they get up after sitting for some time. They may feel sick or experience blurred vision and confusion. There are a variety of causes for low blood pressure: You may for example have inherited it from your parents, or it could be the result of an illness such as diabetes or from taking certain medications. Some people develop it as they get older or it can even be the result of being pregnant. If you experience any of these symptoms it is very important that you get your blood pressure checked – and if necessary to get it treated. Our blood pressure levels have a tremendous impact on the functioning of our organs and any deviations from the norm are not recommended

What is the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective on low blood pressure?

According to TCM the symptoms of low blood pressure point to deficiencies in Yang, Blood and Qi.

  • Yang represents heat, energy, muscle and power – it keeps you fired up! If there is a deficiency in Yang energy then you will feel tired and weak and may find it hard to ever feel warm. You might also notice that you lack your usual zest for life.
  • Blood circulates around the body and brings with it nourishment in the form of nutrients and oxygen. Where there is a deficiency in Blood this will have a knock on effect on the organs that it serves which will not be able to function at their optimal levels.
  • Qi is the body’s vital energy which enables the process of living to carry on. Qi circulates through the body through a system of energetic pathways- known as meridians. A lack – or deficiency of Qi means that this flow will become sluggish and weak and that the organs that require this Qi will not be sufficiently well fed.

Deficiencies in either Yang, Blood or Qi – or in all of these areas will have a negative impact on the Heart, Spleen or Kidney, resulting in the symptoms of low blood pressure.

Moxibustion for low blood pressure

Moxibustion is a very gentle and relaxing treatment that helps to feed your energy. Research demonstrates that it promotes positive health. Your TCM practitioner will place small grains of lit moxa – this fragrant herb is called Mugwort in English – onto specific acupuncture points. The heat generated from this will gently nourish the flow of Qi and Blood as it passes through your body. The warmth will also provide a welcome boost to your Yang levels. With treatment as your body begins to feel the benefit of the treatment you will notice that your blood pressure levels start to normalise.

3 Moxibustion Points For Low Blood Pressure

(LV 3) also known as Liver 3, this is the point between your big toe and second toe
(LI 4) also called Hegu, is located between the base of your thumb and index finger
(GV 20) also known as Hundred Convergences, this acupressure point can be found by tracing an imaginary line from the ear lobes up through the middle of the top of the ears (the helix) and up to the midline.

Diet and Lifestyle advice to naturally manage low blood pressure

As people with hypotension often feel dizzy when when standing up allow yourself plenty of time to acclimatise by taking your time when you rise from sitting to standing. When getting out of bed in the morning stretch slowly and to be mindful of the way that you start your day. This will help you to feel in control of that way that you feel and reduce dizzy spells.

Food…eat and enjoy!

Eat small and frequent meals – lying down or sitting still for a while after eating may also help. Make sure that these meals are easy for your body to digest – think plenty of warm and delicious soups. These will have a wonderful effect on nourishing your Qi levels.

Look after your kidneys!

It is so important, particularly if you are dehydrated that you increase the amount of water you drink every day. This will have the effect of flushing out your kidneys. If you drink alcohol, try to cut back – in doing so you will help your kidneys to work at their optimum levels.

Let’s keep moving

Being sedentary and hypotension do not go well together. Try to boost the flow of your blood by making sure that you stand up and move around regularly. This will not only gently support your blood pressure but the movements will encourage blood to circulate and to nourish your tissues more effectively.
