Very Low AMH Explained: Can You Still Get Pregnant?
Anti-Mullerian hormone, or simply AMH, is a protein that is tested to determine the number of eggs a woman has left in her ovaries. The lower your AMH levels, the fewer eggs remain.
The problem? When women see that they have very low AMH, it can often lead to despair. They assume very low AMH means infertility. However, there can still be an ovarian reserve, and it is still possible to get pregnant with your own eggs.
Below, we’re explaining what AMH is, what very low AMH fertility means, and whether you can still get pregnant with low AMH.
Understanding AMH Test Results
Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) is produced by immature ovarian follicles or eggs. These eggs have not yet been released into the fallopian tube for fertilisation, meaning they represent your remaining ovarian reserve. The more eggs there are, the more AMH is released. Or put another way, AMH levels are directly proportional to the egg supply.
So, what does this mean for your test results? You will have a number between 0 and 4+. The lower the number is, the lower your AMH levels.
Here’s a quick overview:
|
AMH Level (ng/ml) |
Category |
What It Means |
|
Above 4.0 |
High AMH |
Higher ovarian follicle count. Can be associated with PCOS in some women. |
|
1.0 – 4.0 |
Normal |
Typical range for many women of reproductive age. |
|
0.5 – 1.0 |
Low |
Reduced ovarian reserve. |
|
Below 0.5 |
Very Low |
Significantly reduced ovarian reserve. |
Extremely low AMH levels are defined as <1. If your AMH levels are very high, it can be an indicator of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Don’t be alarmed. A single AMH test doesn’t tell the whole story. AMH levels can fluctuate.
When being tested, it’s sensible to ask your doctor how much variability is expected and whether repeat testing or additional markers are recommended.
What Does “Very Low AMH” Mean?
Very low AMH levels suggest that there’s a reduced number of remaining eggs. This will affect your chances of conceiving compared with having low or normal AMH levels.
But pregnancy is still possible with very low AMH
Just because the remaining number of eggs is small doesn’t mean they’re not good quality. In some cases, it might be better to have fewer good-quality eggs than lots of bad-quality eggs. Nor is low AMH definitive on whether you can or cannot conceive.
Your test results simply provide information on how many eggs you have left. What matters most is how those remaining eggs are supported.
Can You Still Conceive with Very Low AMH?
Yes, although a low AMH can make conception more challenging. Even with very low AMH, you can still conceive, including via natural conception.
Very low AMH does not mean infertility
Very low AMH means lower egg quantity, not zero fertility. You don’t need hundreds of eggs to get pregnant. You need a single good-quality egg to get fertilised and implanted.
So, how do you maximise your chances of success?
The secret lies in timing and personalised care. If you’ve received your test results, it’s important to understand your situation. Time is against you, as the number will continue to drop over time. But with the right diet, lifestyle, and other treatments such as supplements and acupuncture, you can still get pregnant.
Our Recent Success Story Reveals Truth About Ultralow AMH Patients
Sienna was 38 years old with an AMH of just 0.1 pmol/L. She’d just had a failed IVF and had been struggling with endometriosis and fibroids. Everyone told her it was the end of the road.
But it wasn’t.
When she contacted GinSen, she felt broken. She has numerous symptoms: cold hands and feet, headaches, severe PMS, constipation, and crushing fatigue. However, after a few consultations, we corrected underlying imbalances using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles.
An herbal tea nourished her weak kidney energy, rebalancing hormones and supporting egg health. The Women’s Life supplement and Endometriosis & Stress Support Kit helped with the lingering inflammation. And finally, a personalised diet and lifestyle plan built a solid foundation of sleep, digestion, and emotional balance.
The result? In June 2024 — just six months after contacting us — she conceived, and in early 2025 her beautiful baby boy was born.
How Age Matters
As you get older, you lose more and more eggs. This is normal. It also means that AMH naturally declines with age. But as everyone knows, older women often conceive, even if it’s slightly more difficult than in younger women.
Interpreting AMH levels should always be age-specific. If you’re under 35, anything below 1.0 is usually considered low. But for 35-40-year-olds, below ~0.7-1.0 is low, and over 40 low AMH is common, expected, and normal.
Up until the age of 40, pregnancy is often possible (especially with IVF). However, if you’re between 40 and 43 and have low serum AMH levels, then your chances of IVF success are greatly reduced.
A 2016 study found that women with very low AMH levels (<0.5 ng/mL) undergoing IVF still had a “reasonable chance” of achieving pregnancy. Women under 35 years old with very low AMH had a clinical pregnancy rate of about 31 % per oocyte pickup, compared with 23.2 % for ages 35–39 and only 10.2 % for ages 40–43. Age, not tiny differences in AMH, was the deciding factor.

What Are The Treatments For Low AMH
Acupuncture For Low AMH
Acupuncture is the primary TCM treatment for low AMH-related infertility. It gives you the best chance of conceiving by supporting ovarian function and restoring any imbalances in your body.
In one case study, a woman with ovarian cysts (which are linked to low AMH) underwent a successful pregnancy after just seven treatments. It’s believed that inserting needles at certain points in the body activates the nervous system, triggering the release of neuropeptides. These neuropeptides influence certain hormones related to the menstrual cycle, helping to regulate it and relieve other bodily imbalances.
A 2022 systematic review confirmed these results. The analysis of 27 studies found that women who underwent acupuncture had a better live birth rate than the control group. This was true for the number of eggs retrieved and embryo quality.

Can I still get pregnant if I have low AMH but regular periods?
- Many women with low AMH still ovulate and have regular cycles.
- AMH reflects ovarian reserve, not ovulation quality.
- Other fertility factors like egg quality, uterine health, and hormonal balance play a crucial role.
- Many women with low AMH who conceived naturally or with treatment.

Low AMH levels can vary over time and are often influenced by age or underlying conditions. In TCM, these changes are seen as signs of imbalance in Qi, Yin, Yang, and the vital organs—especially the Kidneys, Liver, Spleen, and Heart—not just a hormonal issue. A proper diagnosis by a qualified TCM practitioner is essential to guide treatment and support reproductive health.
