IVF and Traditional Chinese Medicine
IVF and Traditional Chinese Medicine
Many couples who have difficulty conceiving naturally undergo Assisted Fertility Treatment, of which In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is one of the more common techniques. During IVF, eggs are surgically removed from the woman’s ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The fertilised egg, now called an embryo, is returned to the woman’s womb to grow and develop.
IVF treatment doesn’t always result in pregnancy and can be both physically and emotionally demanding. The success rate depends on the age of the woman undergoing treatment as well as the cause of infertility (if it’s known). It becomes less successful with age and is not usually recommended in the UK for woman over 42.
The latest figures (2010) from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the UK’s Independent Regulator, show that 25.6% of IVF treatments using a woman’s own fresh eggs resulted in pregnancy.
This low rate of success, combined with the stress and invasiveness of Assisted Fertility Treatment is discouraging and distressing for many couples. While many do go on to have successful pregnancies using IVF and other technologies, many also choose to look at alternative therapies, including TCM Fertility Treatment, either instead of, or in conjunction with, Western Medical treatments.
How TCM can help
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), used in conjunction with IVF or other methods of Assisted Fertility Treatment, can greatly optimise the chances of a successful pregnancy for those experiencing difficulties in having a baby. Acupuncture can be used as a drug free, holistic treatment to help prepare the woman’s body so that it is more receptive to IVF treatment or can be used hand in hand with IVF treatment to help naturally improve the chances of getting pregnant.

Throughout my life, I have always found exams of any kind extremely stressful. Recently, when I was training to be an aerobics instructor, the thought of the practical examination filled me with dread. I had several acupuncture treatments in the run up to my exam to relieve anxiety and reduce stress. The acupuncture, herbal medicine, breathing exercises and reflexology massages made a huge difference. Although I did still suffer some nerves on the day of the exam, the overall effect was that the stress reduced significantly and I passed the exam. I cannot thank GinSen enough, they taught me to control my nerves, and without them, I am not sure I would have made it through my exam quite so easily
