Patient Background / Story
Before visiting GinSen, Tanya had attended a final consultation with a gynaecologist at James Paget Hospital. In her own words, she was told that she would never have a baby naturally and that if she wanted to become pregnant, she would need IVF.
“After my final consultation with the Gynaecologist at James Paget Hospital I was told I would never have a baby naturally and if I wanted to get pregnant I would need to do IVF.”
Tanya had previously become pregnant in May 2024 and had never used contraceptive pills. She also had a history of PCOS, although her current hormone results and uterine health were not known at the time of her GinSen consultation.
Her menstrual cycle was generally regular, lasting 28–30 days, with six days of bleeding. She reported two heavier days, bright red blood and some clots, together with mild cramping and breast tenderness around her period.
Alongside her fertility concerns, Tanya was experiencing disrupted sleep, tiredness, feeling cold, some stress and increased thirst. She had a good appetite and regular daily bowel movements.
Her diet included vegetables every day, with red meat around three times a week, chicken once a week and fish once a week.
What Tanya Was Dealing With From a TCM Perspective
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, Tanya’s presentation was considered in relation to her Kidney Yang and Qi, with signs of coldness and underlying deficiency forming part of the overall TCM picture.
Her tendency to feel cold and tired, together with disrupted sleep and her menstrual symptoms, were considered alongside her history of PCOS and her fertility goals. In TCM, the Kidney system is traditionally regarded as closely connected with reproductive health, while Qi and Blood are considered important for a healthy menstrual cycle.
Her menstrual pattern, including a 28–30 day cycle, heavier bleeding for two days, clots, mild cramping and breast tenderness, was also taken into account when assessing her individual TCM presentation. The aim of treatment was therefore not simply to focus on conception, but to address the wider pattern identified during her consultation. The programme focused on:
- Supporting Kidney Qi and Yang
- Nourishing and regulating Blood
- Promoting the smooth movement of Qi
- Supporting overall menstrual and reproductive wellbeing
How We Helped : The GinSen TCM Way
1. Acupuncture to Support Her Individual TCM Pattern
Acupuncture was an important part of Tanya’s personalised programme. Her treatment was based on the TCM pattern identified during her consultation, with particular attention to supporting Kidney Qi and Yang, regulating Qi and Blood, and addressing the signs of coldness and tiredness she had reported.
Acupuncture was also used as part of the wider approach to supporting her menstrual and reproductive wellbeing. Rather than following a fixed treatment protocol, sessions were adapted according to how Tanya was feeling and any changes in her cycle, sleep, energy and general wellbeing.
2. Massage for Relaxation and Overall Wellbeing
Massage was incorporated alongside acupuncture to provide additional support for relaxation and general wellbeing. Tanya had described some stress, disrupted sleep and occasional tension in her legs. Within her personalised programme, massage complemented her acupuncture treatment and provided a further opportunity to support relaxation and ease physical tension.
The combination of acupuncture and massage formed part of a broader approach that considered Tanya’s physical and emotional wellbeing alongside her fertility goals.
3. Personalised Chinese Herbal Tea
Tanya was also recommended a personalised Chinese herbal tea based on her individual TCM presentation. Her herbal support was selected to complement the principles guiding her acupuncture treatment, with a focus on supporting the TCM pattern identified during her consultation, including Kidney support, Qi and Blood regulation and addressing signs of coldness.
The herbal tea formed part of her ongoing programme rather than being used as a standalone treatment, allowing her to continue her personalised TCM support between clinic sessions.
4. A Consistent, Whole-Person Approach
Tanya’s programme brought together acupuncture, massage and herbal support rather than focusing on one aspect of her fertility journey in isolation. Her menstrual cycle, previous PCOS history, sleep, energy levels, tendency to feel cold, stress, diet and general wellbeing were all considered as part of her individual TCM assessment.
She was encouraged to remain consistent with her programme, which was initially planned for a minimum of three months. Tanya reported becoming pregnant after four months of support.

The Result
After four months of trying for her second baby while following her GinSen programme, Tanya became pregnant.
Having previously been told during a consultation with a gynaecologist at James Paget Hospital that she would need IVF to become pregnant, the news was particularly meaningful for Tanya. She had initially been uncertain whether the approach would work, but chose to remain consistent with her programme.
Tanya went on to become a mother to a baby girl and describes her experience with GinSen and Dr Lily with great gratitude. She also credits her faith and prayers as an important part of her journey.
As Tanya shared:
“I was not 100% sure this would work, but I kid you not, not only did I get pregnant after four months but I am also a mother of an almost two-year-old baby girl.” She added: “Given how kind and patient Dr Lilly is, I am forever grateful for her support. All I can say to anyone trying for a child, have hope and give Dr Lilly a chance, you never know.”
